The turtle has great symbolic significance in many ancient cultures of the world. The turtle shape symbolizes the entire cosmos; the dome shaped back represents the sky, the body represents earth and the undershell represents water. Also symbolic of long life, the turtle is said to live 10,000 years and is often seen paired with the tsuru.
